Anthropic announced its latest AI model, [Claude Mythos](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/apr/08/anthropic-ai-cybersecurity-software), this month but said it would not be released publicly, because it turns computers into crime scenes. Banks in [Europe](https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/anthropic-plans-provide-mythos-access-european-banks-soon-sources-say-2026-04-21/) are likely to test it next. Mythos doesn’t necessarily [create](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/apr/13/ai-tech-marketing) a new kind of cyber threat. In February, the Pentagon deemed the company a “[security risk](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/mar/24/anthropic-pentagon-lawsuit)” and cut it off from lucrative deals after it refused to allow its technology to be used for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons. Mythos is powerful, but Anthropic’s [PR](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/apr/22/what-is-anthropic-mythos-ai-threat-global-cybersecurity) has shaped the narrative as much as the technology. The White House thinks that Anthropic has strategic value – [inviting](https://www.axios.com/2026/04/17/anthropic-white-house-wiles-bessent-amodei) it back into the fold and signalling a shift from treating AI firms as contractors to partners. Clearly, whoever – state or firm – creates the most powerful AI models will gain [geopolitical](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/22/technology/anthropics-mythos-ai.html) advantages over [friends](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c2ev24yx4rmo) and foes alike. Claude Mythos is Anthropic’s unreleased frontier model that found thousands of zero-day vulnerabilities.
