Chart: BYD Surpasses Tesla to Become EV Market Leader

While Chinese manufacturer BYD already pulled ahead of Tesla in production volume last year, with 1,777,965 battery electric vehicles (BEV) produced in 2024 (4,500 more than Tesla), the American manufacturer remained ahead in sales: 1.79 million units sold for Tesla compared to 1.76 million for BYD. As shown by the latest data released by the two manufacturers, BYD’s cumulative sales of pure electric vehicles reached approximately 1.61 million units from January to September 2025, compared to 1.22 million units for Tesla during the same period. While BYD is expected to easily exceed 2 million sales for the first time in 2025 (after recording more than 500,000 sales in the fourth quarter of 2023 and 2024), Tesla needs to increase its sales in the coming fourth quarter by more than 50 percent compared to Q4 2024 in order to reach this milestone.
