Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system is an advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) comprised of automated driving features. As an alternative to a purchase, Tesla also offers Full Self-Driving subscriptions to owners of Tesla vehicles capable of operating the system. That’s largely because FSD has always required full supervision of the driver, though Tesla only recently explicitly acknowledged this fact when it changed the name of the system to Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in a 2024 update. Full Self-Driving (Supervised) does not absolve a Tesla driver from the responsibility for the safe operation of the vehicle. Dedicated Tesla owners who intend to keep their vehicles for a long time, or to buy a new Tesla, will likely save money by buying FSD upfront and transferring when it’s time to buy a new car, but should remember that Tesla only offers the option to transfer during certain promotions.
